Employer health insurance costs remain a savage beast in spite of healthcare reform. Employers and brokers, who’ve already shopped plans and shifted costs as much as possible, are realizing that rising expenditures follow health risks—and that 60-80% of healthcare costs are due to the risks of poor lifestyle choices. It stands to reason that proactively controlling or reducing risks will lead to controlled or reduced costs. Consequently, these reduced risks—manifest as better lifestyle choices—will boost productivity and morale. Implementing wellness in the workplace is essential to managing risk.
Once a company’s leadership realizes the need for a wellness program, they turn to the HR department to implement. Most commonly, the HR staff is too busy and not properly trained or equipped to manage wellness efforts effectively. In other instances, staffers may lack interest or struggle with their personal health, limiting their ability to be effective champions. Also, they typically do not want to compromise their reputations, livelihoods, valuable time or legal standing on a program they were not hired to manage.
So where do they turn for help? The benefits broker, the health plan or the local hospital.
Whether a company turns to the benefits broker, the health plan or the local hospital, there are innate problems.
Brokers have many of the same issues as the HR department. They’re extremely busy and often don’t have the education, training or experience to manage wellness. They do not want to risk their reputations and their livelihoods on a program they were not hired to manage. In addition, if the goal is to build employee trust and invoke behavior change, brokers know employees have major concerns revealing personal health information to them, the health carrier, to HR or any other in-house wellness person. Furthermore, the broker may not know how to recruit, train or manage a wellness professional, and keep them up to speed on best practices.
Not to mention, it’s also a large expense to add a headcount for an individual whose work is often seasonal, like around the time of open enrollment.
The problem with turning to the health plan for Wellness? Health plans usually provide virtual support for Wellness programs—just window dress, really. These plans only offer help to covered employees, and should a company change health plans, the Wellness program is ended. The broker in this scenario faces lots of complication, having to work with separate teams—and different systems—from each carrier.
Relying on local hospitals for Wellness is a hit-or-miss endeavor. Often, hospitals offer Wellness programs as promotions, making quality and consistency less than reliable. Hospitals are not attuned to employers’ need for continuity, accountability and cost containment. And if an employer has multiple locations across regions and states, there’s no Wellness solution for all employees.
