JENNY’S WELLNESS JOURNEY
Aside from losing 22 pounds and being more fit, the other tangible thing that has come from this process is that I am sleeping better. I was fascinated to learn that in the “deep sleep” cycle, your body releases hormones that promote tissue repair/recovery In order to hit the deep sleep cycle, though, you have to sleep between 7 9 hours a night. I hadn’t slept 7 9 hours a night since I was 12, so I had to consciously, purposely, and very DELIBERATELY “shut the big engine down” earlier every night. It has really helped alleviate the soreness and morning stiffness, and it obviously helps with fatigue, too. All of those things mean I’m happier in the morning, and happiness is the only goal. Period.
WHAT OBSTACLES HAVE YOU OVERCOME?
I had to get out of my own way! I had to rid my brain of the image of being “skinny” that I thought I “should” be. I had to accept that this is going to be a LONG journey, and I had to talk myself into playing the long game. Slow and steady wins the race.
WHAT IS YOUR NUTRITION SECRET?
I discovered the science of food. Everything is connected. We need all components of food. They serve physiological purposes and are fuel to the big engine that is “us”. Discover the foods that satisfy those needs and keep you full and eat them.
WHAT IS YOUR FITNESS SECRET?
Realism. I am not going to run 10 miles a day for the rest of my life. I had to ask myself what I REALLY was willing to do EVERY DAY and I built on that. Be honest with yourself about how much you are really going to do and then adjust accordingly.
WHAT ROLE HAS YOUR CHP HEALTH COACH AND CHP PLAYED IN YOUR WELLNESS JOURNEY?
What role has your CHP Health Coach and CHP played in your wellness journey? Lizzie has been an amazing sounding board. When I find new ways to stay engaged, I always email her and say “Hey! Lookie here!” She helped me find a great virtual walking challenge app that has really motivated me to continue my daily fitness efforts. Her knowledge is extremely helpful, and her encouragement is always a morale boost.
